Dem Mann fiel die Rolle des Erzeugers und Versorgers zu, nicht aber die des Erziehers. Der Mangel an Studien über werdende Väter in der psychoanalytischen Literatur wurde in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten des Öfteren diskutiert. Die Untersuchung der psychischen Vorgänge des werdenden Vaters ist ein neueres Phänomen. Erst durch Studien zur Vaterabwesenheit fing guy langsam an, die Vater-Kind-Beziehung zu erforschen. Bei Kindern, die ohne Vater aufwuchsen, hatte guy vermehrt Probleme bei der Geschlechterrollenentwicklung, weniger moralisches Urteilsfähigkeit oder fehlendes Verantwortungsbewusstsein festgestellt.
Hauptziel dieser Arbeit ist jedoch nicht, den Einfluss von Männern auf ihre Kinder zu analysieren, sondern die Erwartungen und Empfindungen der werdenden Väter vor und während der Schwangerschaft aufzuzeigen. Meine Arbeit gliedert sich in drei Teile. Zu Beginn werde ich mich mit Michael D. Diamonds1 Werk von 1991 „Der werdende Vater: Psychoanalytische Ansichten über den vergessenen Elternteil“ befassen. In seiner Abhandlung charakterisiert Diamond den männlichen Kinderwunsch aus psychoanalytischer Sicht sowie die verschiedenen Phasen der Vaterschaft. Nachdem ich diesen Prozess des Vaterwerdens dargestellt habe, werde ich die von Diamond beschriebenen Stadien an einem Fallbeispiel des Psychoanalytikers Alan R. Gurwitt2 verdeutlichen. Anschließend will ich auf eine Studie von Harald Werneck3 eingehen, die 1998 in Österreich durchgeführt wurde, da sie meiner Meinung nach die Veränderung der Vaterrolle unserer Zeit intestine widerspiegelt.
